The system combines all the advantages of GPS with those of inertial technology, to provide continuous and accurate data. By utilizing the POS LV system, data capture can be undertaken quickly and efficiently.

IMU: Inertial Measurement Unit generates a true representation of vehicle motion in all three axes, producing continuous, accurate position and orientation information

PCS: POS Computer System enables raw GPS data from as few as one satellite to be processed directly into the system, to compute accurate positional information in areas of intermittent, or no GPS reception

GPS Receivers: Embedded GPS receivers provide heading aiding to supplement the inertial data

GPS Antennas: Two GPS antennas generate raw observables data

Sub-meter accuracy: The system is rated to get 0.3 m accuracy in the X,Y position and 0.5 m in the Z position.

Distance Measuring Indicator (DMI)

BEI 5000 Pulse Incremental Encoder

Allows for collection of high-resolution imagery at posted speeds. Distance Measurement Indicator computes wheel rotation information to aid vehicle positioning

Cameras

Allied Vision Prosilica GX1920C

Schneider Compact Lenses

Frame rate 15 images per second, 1936x1456 color resolution

High-definition cameras with precision lenses allow for accurate asset extraction.

Pavement Imaging System

INO Laser Road Imaging System (LRIS)

Two-line scan cameras and lasers configured to image 4m transverse road sections with 1 mm resolution (4000 pixel) at speeds that can reach 100 km/h

Allows fully illuminated pavement image collection even in heavy shadow/canopy areas

Surface Road Profiler

ICC 5-laser System (Two Selcom SLS6000/375, Three Selcom SLS6375/750)

Angle Lasers (SLS6000/375) have a typical accuracy of 0.0002 inches.

Point Lasers (SLS6375/750) used to determine rut have a typical accuracy of 0.00037 inches.

Used to collect accurate and precise Rutting and Roughness (IRI) values while traveling posted speed limits

Acquisition Server/Software

Image Acquisition Server running Windows 7 Ultimate with Qcorei7, 8gb RAM, (8) 2Tb disk drives

Allows for RAID data capture to prevent loss of data

Utilizes Norpix’s Streampix Acquisition software, capable of handling up to 4 cameras triggering simultaneously, with precise timestamps encoded into image EXIF.

Streampix allows for on-the-fly image enhancements for dark or bright lighting conditions

The total collection consisted of 2,342 miles and spanned from 6/03/2022 to 9/01/2022. Throughout the collection process, the unprocessed data is sent to the DTS headquarters in Orlando where it is converted into processed imagery. Once processed, the DTS team extracts the asset data utilizing DTS' EarthShaper software.

Each run of data was reviewed for Sidewalks. During the extraction process, the beginning of the asset is set by two control points, both placed as close to each other as possible to determine the most accurate start point. A series of control points along the asset are set, all extracted the same way utilizing two points in two concurrent images, to create the most accurate line to depict the Sidewalks.

Once each run is extracted, the Sidewalks assets are exported. This creates a point/line shapefile and exports a chosen image for each asset from the DTS processed imagery.

Once all runs are reviewed and extracted, the shapefiles are then merged together and projected into the geographic coordinate system that most accurately represents the data.

Once the Sidewalks are extracted, projected, and merged, the complete data undergoes DTS' quality assurance process. At least ten percent of the total asset features are reviewed by a team member who did not extract the asset. The quality assurance process reviews the location of the asset to make sure it is represented accurately and within three feet or less of the actual location. The attributes populated during the extraction process are also reviewed for accuracy. If the data does not pass the initial quality assurance test, it is revisited to most accurately represent the asset.

After the QA process, the data is then imported to a file geodatabase with various domains established to ensure consistency.

The extracted data shows that there are 61,425 Sidewalks for a total of 1601 Miles.
